GARTH’S CONCERT FUNDS FOR FIREFIGHTERS A BIG HELP
Written by Neil Haislop

GARTH’S CONCERT FUNDS FOR FIREFIGHTERS A BIG HELP

Image
Credit Neil Haislop
Late last year a series of colossal wild fires devastated hundreds of thousands of acres from Los Angeles down to San Diego, California. When Garth Brooks heard about this he decided to help Southern California firefighters by staging his, now famous, amazing, 5 full blown concerts in two nights at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Garth partnered with American Express and  The Tribune McCormick Foundation,  whose Board of Directors, along with Garth’s contribution approved more than $6 million in grants for the 2008 Southern California Fire Intervention Relief Effort (FIRE) campaign.

After a flurry of new fires sprang up in Southern California over the last two weeks, Nashville IQ checked in with Southern California firefighters to find out how Brooks’ effort and funds had helped out.

Fire Captain, Julie Hutchinson (CalFire/Riverside County Fire), told us, “I think the attention that Garth Brooks brought to what we did and the passion and understanding for what the public had gone through was incredible. He responded to what he was hearing about, instead of just sitting there and waiting for somebody else to fix it, and that’s what touched me the most."

Image
When asked how Garth’s contribution and corporate funds were helping them out this season, Hutchison explained that it wasn’t spent on big items like fire trucks or helicopters, but rather, it was the day-to-day, fire-to-fire support equipment that  is depleted fighting fires and are hard to come by in today’s bad economic times and stretched government budgets. They are hoses, radios, and fire shelters (personal fire-resistant tent-like shelters firemen can deploy to survive when a fast-moving fire overtakes them and there’s no escape).  “Fire shelters alone are $400 dollars a piece,” said Hutchinson about the shelters that can be the difference between life or death for firefighters on the line.

Captain Hutchinson said being able to buy enough hand held radios is a Godsend in big fires like they experienced last year.  When a lot of firefighters came in from nearby states, their radios were useless because they didn’t have the same L.A. frequencies. “The ability of being able to open a box and have a cache of radios all with the frequencies they’ll be needing here so we can communicate with each other on an incident, that’s huge! We have enough for our needs but we don’t always have enough for others coming in to help so this is a great help.”

When we asked Captain Hutchinson how other performers could help firefighters as Brooks has done, she said that they should look to their local communities, especially small community fire departments all over the U.S. “There are many communities that are hard-pressed to get new equipment. There are many volunteer fire departments, always desperate for funds, all across America that could benefit from the generosity of big performers that want to help firefighting efforts everywhere.”

TIM McGRAW AND “TIM McGRAW” WRITER AT WORLD SERIES

Image
Countryforever.com
Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift both had reasons to be invited to the 3rd game of the World Series Saturday night at Philadelphia’s Citizen’s Bank.

Taylor is a Pennsylvania native and was “at bat” first singing the National Anthem. She sang the National Anthem for the first time at age 10 for her hometown farm club  team the Reading Phillies.

Swift is a Pennsylvania native who sang her first National Anthem at the age of 10 for her hometown team, the Reading Phillies.

McGraw, was invited to deliver the game ball to the pitching mound, to honor his late father, Tug McGraw. The last pitch thrown in the last Phillies World Series was by Tug McGraw.

SPEAKING OF TIM…HE HELPS FAN PROPOSE MARRIAGE AT SIGNING

Before Tim headed off to the Phillies’ game, he held his book signing in New York City at Barnes & Noble for his book, “My Little Girl,” where fans had started lining up 6 hours before the event.

One of the signing’s highlights was a young couple who had drove from Virginia earlier in the day for the chance to meet McGraw.  When they made their way to the book table, the boyfriend proposed to his  girlfriend by hiding a “will you marry me” note inside a book Tim was to sign.  When McGraw opened the book to autograph it, he noticed the handwritten note  on an index card and handed it to the young woman and said, “I believe this is  for you.”  …And she said yes.

Earlier in the day, about the time fans were beginning to gather for the in store, McGraw made his first appearance on the Rachael Ray Show. The show will air November 5.

BRAD PAISLEY GOT THE NEWS OF NEW BABY FROM HIS FIRST BABY

Image
It’s usually the wife that tells the husband the good news, “Honey I’m pregnant,”  but , to deliver the good news to Brad Paisley about the coming of his  second child came from his son, Huck.

Brad says,  “I wake up pretty late when I’ve been out on the road, and on a Sunday morning or a Monday morning, I think I’d gotten back from a trip, and I was sleepin’, and it was about ten in the morning, and my son wakes me up every day now. He comes in, when she lets him, and he comes around the bed, brings a book and gets in bed, and we read a book in the morning. And he came around, and she said, ‘Here, give this to Daddy.’ And I saw him walk up with a pregnancy test and hand it to me. And I looked at him, and I said — and he was just all happy — I said, ‘No, you don’t get it. This is really bad for you and I. This isn’t gonna be fun for us for the next nine months. We’re in for it, you know?’ But that’s how she told me, which was a great way to do it.”

CRAIG MORGAN IS OPRY’S NEWEST MEMBER

Craig Morgan became the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry Saturday night (October 25) in Nashville during a televised performance at the Opry House in Nashville. As is tradition, another Opry member handled the induction, in this case it was Craig’s longtime friend John Conlee, who introduced Craig the first night he ever played the Opry and also surprised him last month with an invitation to become a member. “It’s plain to me that nobody loves the Grand Ole Opry more than this young man right here. He loves it as much as he loves his country, and he’s proven that with his service to his country before,” referring to Craig’s time in the Army. Craig choked back tears of emotion as he told the crowd he was proud to accept the honor, adding, “I hope I can uphold its standards.”

Backstage, following his induction, Craig cited those standards he was referring to. “It’s a truth…it’s an honesty…it’s a sincerity…it’s a sense of heritage…it’s a sense and feel of America like nothing else,” he said. “Just to play the Grand Ole Opry is an honor in itself,” he added. “You can go anywhere in the world and say ‘country music’ and without fail someone will say ‘Grand Ole Opry.’ So, to be considered a part of that is a huge honor!”

WHAT YEAR DID MARTINA McBRIDE SCORE HER FIRST #1 HIT?

It charted in December of 1995, then "Wild Angels" went on to become Martina McBride's first #1 hit in early '96.

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT...MARTINA McBRIDE?

Did you know that a song that didn't hit the Top 10, became one of the most important songs of Martina McBride's career?

Usually, a song that peaks at #12, does not turn into a career song for an artist. But, Martina McBride's #12 song, "Independence Day," is one of the most important songs of her career.
Image
Countryforever.com

Martina explained to us, "'Independence Day"' brought us so many awards and a couple of things of course like my first CMA award for the Video was real special. And,  'Independence Day' winning the Song of the Year this year just the fact to me that I recorded the song that will forever and ever be the 1995 Song of the Year is just know, incredible. And when you have a song that you feel so passionately about that you love so much and then you see it get recognized it's really a special, special thing."
Of course Martina says the best thing that came from the song was that it resonated for abused women across America.
"I think you know we got so many letters, I mean the basic theme of the letters is that something in that song has helped the women to feel not alone, something in that song they identify with that makes them feel free and makes them feel like I don't want to say validated but maybe that's a good word for it, makes them feel like they that somebody else understands what they're going through."

CARRIE UNDERWOOD UNVEILS CARRIE UNDERWOOD  AT MADAME TUSSAUDS

ImageRecords used to be called "wax" and if a singer recorded a big enough "stack of wax,"  they became famous enough to be immortalized in wax at Madame Tussauds in Times Square, New York City. Yesterday, it was Carrie Underwood's turn as Carrie unveiled her wax figure at Madame Tussauds New York.  Underwood was welcomed by a barrage of camera flashes as she posed side-by-side with her wax likeness.

REPLICATING CARRIE...The creation of Underwood’s figure began earlier this year when a team of Madame Tussauds studio artists flew out to meet Carrie on tour for her figure sitting.  Underwood was an enthusiastic participant in the figure making process – not only did she spend more than an hour with the studio artists, but she also generously donated a replica of the dress that she wore to the 2006 CMA Awards, when she was first named Female Vocalist of The Year, to Madame Tussauds for her figure to don.  The dress was designed by Trish Townsend and constructed by Dez Zamek.

ALSO, CARRIE TO CO-HOST CMAS WITH BRAD PAISLEY
Underwood will host the 2008 CMA Awards with Brad Paisley on ABC.  She was also recently nominated for two 2008 CMA Awards, Female Vocalist of The Year, a title she currently holds for 2006 & 2007, and Album of The Year for CARNIVAL RIDE.  In May, she was inducted as the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry and named Top Female Vocalist at the 2008 Academy of Country Music Awards for the second consecutive time.  Her current album CARNIVAL RIDE, which contains the current smash “Just A Dream,” contains the #1 co-written hits “So Small,” “All-American Girl” and “Last Name.”  Since her debut in 2005, Underwood’s two albums have sold nearly 10 million copies and she is the all-time U.S. top-selling American Idol contestant.

Image
Countryforever.com
Toby Keith sits atop the country singles charts this week with "She Never Cried In Front Of Me" his 24th #1 song.
MEANWHILE...
TOBY REVEALS the next single from his upcoming new album, That Don't Make Me A Bad Guy, due out next Tuesday, Oct. 28th, by releasing the video for "God Love Her" to CMT and GAC. God Love Her" will open on CMT in Hot Shot rotation, GAC adds it in Turbo Track rotation with CMT Pure cranking the video in Heavy as well.  Yahoo! Music, CMT.com and GAC.com have posted the video on their sites.

The two singles so far reflect Toby's growing vocal artisty and diversity of style from sensitive tunes like these to his signature attitude tunes like the country kicker title song, stone bluesy feel of  "Man In The Moon,' to the below the border fun of "Cabo San Lucas." Not-to-mention some torchy Louisian' licks with "Creole Woman" and the drivin' swagger of "The Time It Would Take," this collection is , big, big fun from the big guy.

ALSO, TOBY KEITH's new movie, "Beer for My Horses," will air on CMT, November 2nd.
Check CMT.com for air times.
