HOW GOOD WAS TOBY KEITH'S START ON THE COUNTRY CHARTS?

Toby Keith had a great start beginning with a debut #1 hit in 1993, "Should've Been a Cowboy." It was a the first of a streak of seven consecutive hits that included a Top 10, with the rest Top 5 or  better  including his first two #1 songs ("Should've Been a Cowboy" and "Who's That Man").

DID YOU KNOW THIS ABOUT TIM McGRAW?

Did you know that one of the secrets to Tim McGraw's vocal talent is his determination to keep on learning?

Tim tells us, "I'm always learning you know.  Every time I hear a new record, every time I hear my old records or every time I hear a MERLE HAGGARD record, or anything I think I learn.  And I think when you stop learning in this business, especially with the talent that's out there now, you stop learning, you're in trouble.  I hope I sing better on the next album than I do on the last."

CHESNEY'S STRESS-RELEASING RITUAL

Image

When you have a career running at the high RPMs as Kenny Chesney's for the last few years, the question becomes, how does Chesney vent the stress of a fast-lane career when he's off duty?

Kenny says, more often than not he  does some, or all, of  the following during holiday breaks, "I play golf, work out and just try to get away.  I'll go somewhere on vacation. I work hard all year long and in January then I might go somewhere down to the Caribbean and just hang out for a month and not take a guitar.. unplug my phone and you know, not doing anything. I might not tell anybody where I am!"

KEITH URBAN, WIFE AND BABY GO TO CHURCH IN NASHVILLE

Keith and Nicole

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman celebrated their daughter's first Christmas by taking Sunday Rose with them to Christmas services in a local Nashville Chapel. Nicole says they gave their daughter "a lot of hugs and kisses," for Christmas but she probably liked the the turtle puppet they gave her the most.

ALSO, the video for Keith's new single, "Sweet Thing," is set for release next month. In the clip you'll see Urban's own vintage Mustang.

LADY A'S KELLEY POPS THE QUESTION

Image
Charles - Hillary - Dave

We still get the occasional question "are Charles Kelley and band-mate Hillary a couple?
The answer was always, no, and perhaps they'll believe us now since Charles has popped the question to Cassie McConnell, who said, "Yes!."

OFF SEASON HEADLINES

Former official Mauricia Grant and NASCAR settled her discrimination lawsuit last week.  Neither NASCAR nor Ms. Grant admits liability or wrongdoing in the settlement.  NASCAR's Ramsey Poston said We’re glad to have the case settled on mutually acceptable terms." The specific terms of the agreement of course are confidential.

Iowa Speedway has grabbed a date hosting a Camping World Truck Series race next year replacing Mansfield Ohio.  The race will happen on September 5th after Mansfield requested to be removed from the schedule due to the inability to meed NASCAR's requirements to stay on as an official track.  The Nationwide Series will also race at Iowa in 2009.

The ARCA Series tested at Daytona over the weekend giving Cup Series rookie Joey Logano a chance for his first laps at that track.  As you know Logano will take over driving the #20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota in 2009, and is getting valuable time behind the wheel as he is planning on racing the ARCA race, and Bud Shootout on February 7th.  Logano was sixth fastest during his first session on the track at 179.569mph.

For the second straight year, Matt Kenseth has himself a new Cup Series crew chief in Drew Blickensderfer for the 2009 season.  Kenseth of course made the Chase in 2008, finished 11th, but went winless and hopes to change that fortune around.  Blickensderfer was slated to run the full Nationwide Series schedule for the championship with Carl Edwards next year.

Every year about this time USA Today releases it's stats for the most wrecks in NASCAR.  This years honors go to Sam Hornish Jr. topping the list of the highest number of crashes and spins in the Cup Series with 20 incidents in 34 starts, or 59%.  One shocker was Rookie of the Year Regan Smith who had the 3rd lowest rate at 12% and was the first Cup rookie to finish every race in 2008.

Richard Childress now has a 5.5 mile stretch of freeway named after him in North Carolina.  Interstate 85 in Davidson County will now be named the Richard Childress Freeway.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will continue his sponsorship relationship with the Wrangler Jeans company in 2009.  They enter into their 6th straight year together with Dale Jr. saying “Wrangler has been a great supporter of my family, my teams and the sport. I couldn’t be happier that we’ll continue to build on the things we’ve already accomplished.”  The two have also raised more than $175,000 for various charities during this partnership.

Robby Gordon Motorsports announced they will move to running Toyota's for the 2009 season.  Robby's relationship with Toyota actually dates back to 1989 when he won a championship driving a Toyota powered Sport Truck.  The #7 Camry does have a guaranteed starting spot for the Daytona 500.
