Did you know that Kenny Chesney arrived in Nashville in 1990, and immediately got an appointment with somebody at BMI to play them the songs he'd written? He thought he was one meeting away from discovery...BUT, 8 months later he was still learning how to write.

Kenny told us, "His name is Clay Bradley and his position at BMI was writer and publisher relations.  He dealt with the writers and publishers and helps get writers publishing deals.   I played him some songs but, at the time that I played him my first songs, I wasn't really ready you know.
....I thought I was, but I wasn't, I would have it pretty close to the to the topic but the lyric and the verses and the song would wander away from what I was really talking about.  Now it's something that learned how to do.   But, Clay and I developed a working relationship over a period of about 8 months you know.  I wrote a lot of songs and he began to carry a tape of mine in his pocket you know, around town, and played them for publishers."

JACK INGRAM'S SUCCESS SECRET...AIM FOR THE STARS

Jack Ingram has been on a roll, spiraling upward for the last few years and he owes part of that success to his philosophy of aiming high. "You have to have your eye on the prize," Jack tells us. "I've never been bashful about saying I want to be like Haggard or Willie or George Strait. Shoot for the top, man. I had a buddy one time say, 'shoot for the moon and you might land on the roof.' I mean shoot for the Hall of Fame and things like that. You may never make that, but if you aim for that, you'll be a lot farther along than you are now."

KEITH ANDERSON FIXES VOCAL BLEEDING PROBLEM

A singer can injure almost any other part of their body and still make a living, but not if something happens to that million dollar voice. Keith Anderson faced that problem  late last year but now he says he's back good as new.

"I had a vocal chord that would just bleed, once every year for the last  couple of years," Keith tells us. "We were able to track which vessels were doing this over and over and went to Vanderbilt where the have the best doctors in the world for vocal problems. And they went in there with a laser, no cutting, they just cauterized the two vessels that were the problem," Keith explains. "And when you can't talk for three weeks it causes you to think about a lot of things you hadn't dealt with, like the passing of my mother and after being off for 5 weeks it's been great."

Keith says he's been writing a lot for the next album, and has gotten back to performing on the road.

COUNTRY SALES GET BOOST FROM AMERICAN IDOL

Music Row's David Ross reports on the power of American Idol based on SoundsScan figures reporting sales by country artists that appeared on the Grand Ole Opry themed Idol show last week. Featured on the show were Randy Travis, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.

Carrie led the sales pack. Her duet with Randy Travis, “I Told You So,” performed on the show, was the week’s No. 8 most downloaded song with 106,361 sales. Add just under 20,00 more sales for Carrie’s solo version of the track from her album. Her AI theme song, “Home Sweet Home,” in its second week, sold 39,306 downloads a 65% drop, but still strong enough to be the No. 37 most downloaded track of the week. Fans also voted approval for Underwood by boosting sales of her Carnival Ride CD a healthy 59%.

Randy Travis and Warner benefitted by  being on the show as “Artist Mentor.” They scheduled his CD release to coincide and were rewarded with a No. 3 showing on the Top Country Currents list for sales of 16,288 units. Travis’ fans perhaps are less digitally dominant since only 1,101 of those units were downloaded or 6.8%. (Carrie’s album downloads totaled 2,357 units or 12% of her total sales.)

Brad Paisley introduced the new single “Then” on the show triggering sales of 64,127 units.
